FIELD TRIP - 41 - Shell Factory & Nature Park

10/27/2020

16554 North Cleveland Avenue US 41, North Fort Myers, FL 33903

Picture
This one has a little of everything:
  • Animals
  • Rides
  • Gift Shops
  • Restaurants
  • Minigolf
  • Gardens
  • and more!
Up in North Fort Myers (from where we're at), the Shell Factory and Nature Park is an interesting mix of just about everything! It seems to have started as a tourist trap and has grown to have a whole lot of different things to do, especially when everything is open. Covid has shut some things down, but the nature park, gift shops, and minigolf are enough to keep everyone busy!

Check out their discounts and groupon deals, and get the whole family over there! Our favorite part was the nature park, because our kids love animals. They have a lot of colorful birds and interesting animals that you might not even see at larger zoos!

FIELD TRIP - 39 - Waterfall Byway Scenic Drive

HWY 64 near Cashiers and Highlands N.C.

Love waterfalls? I've never seen so many in such a small area! It seems like every few bends in the road you can find one. The windy roads in this area of N.C. zigzag along rivers, so you're never far from rapids, rivers to play or fish in, or waterfalls to visit.
We visited half a dozen in just a two days, without having to hike more than a couple minutes to see them. Get there early, avoid crowds or parking issues, and enjoy nature for free!

WE VISITED:
  • Lake Sequoyah Dam Falls
  • Bridal Veil Falls
  • Silver Run Falls
  • Mill Creek Falls
  • Norton Falls
  • Hurricane Falls

Ready for one of the tallest waterfalls in the Eastern US? It's in northern Georgia!
With a lot of different hiking trails for any fitness level, including an ADA path right up to the waterfalls for Americans with Disabilities, this is one of the prettiest, nicest waterfalls I've ever been to!

With fresh air, wildlife, and a lot of roaring water around you, it's a very nice place to be on a summer day... or any season of the year!

Like nature, walking, animal sightings, and kayaking? I think we've found the place for you. Just off of Palm Beach Blvd. in Fort Myers, there's a nice little park with all of that stuff! It's Manatee Park.

In the colder months you can see manatees. The rest of the year, you can still see wildlife, learn about animals, talk to guides, take a kayak or canoe ride, and more! Even better, other than a minimal parking fee, it's pretty much free!

This is one you're going to want to visit for sure!

FIELD TRIP - 35 - Jim Fleming Ecological Park

3700 Lee Blvd, Lehigh Acres, FL 33971

Heading through Lehigh Acres, you've probably seen this little park, but you've probably never stopped. Do you need a few minutes to decompress after work, or a quiet place to eat lunch? Check out this little park. It has a short boardwalk and peaceful marsh grasses and flowers. It doesn't have a lot of amenities, but it's worth stopping by every now and then.

My daughters love to run the boardwalk, and it really doesn't take long to look, get a breath of fresh air, and then get back in your car. It's usually empty, or there might be 1-2 other cars.

Love American History, Technology, Automotive History, or Aviation History? Get all of that and more in one place at the Henry Ford Museum!

It's truly a tribute to inventors, engineers, and designers. It shows the American spirit of ingenuity through inventions and discoveries over the years. It also has a lot of items of historical importance, from the presidents, to civil rights, to the founding fathers!

This is a Five Minute Field Trip you won't want to miss!

FIELD TRIP - 33 - Grand Caverns

1/9/2020

5 Grand Cavern Rd, Grottoes, VA 24441

Picture
Are you ready for one of the oldest shown caves in the country or the world? The Grand Caverns in Grottoes, Virginia is a perfect set of caves in my opinion. Not only are they reasonably priced and accompanied by a nice gift shop, but they're a pretty easy walk (Even Amazing Andrea at age 4 managed the 70 minute walk), and they're filled with hundreds of cool structures. No other cave I've been in yet has so many structures in so few steps!
The tour guides are knowledgeable and fun, and there is just so much to see. There might be bigger, longer, or deeper caves, but this one seems about perfect to us!

FIELD TRIP - 32 - National Mall & Memorial Parks

Washington D.C.

Picture
It's hard to do Washington D.C. justice in less than a couple days. Still, we tried to pack in what we could in one afternoon. We actually went on Christmas Eve, and the crowds weren't too bad!

We started at The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, then toured the National Mall, taking pictures of several monuments. There are dozens of smaller monuments and statues that we couldn't get to, as well as several monuments across the river or in other nearby areas that we couldn't reach.

Check out what we got to!
